Medical Payments and Personal Injury Protection
Medical Payments coverage.
This type of insurance policy is often referred to as MedPay. It covers
the medical bills for injuries to you and any of your passengers that
result from an accident. In most instances, this type of coverage also
pays medical costs for you and your family in the instance where you
are driving someone else’s car (assuming that they have given you
permission to drive it). It also provides coverage if you are injured
as a pedestrian. MedPay coverage pays out no matter who is found at
fault, though your car insurance carrier can recoup the expense from
another party should they be found liable for the accident.
Personal Injury Protection coverage.
This type of policy is similar to MedPay, but provides additional
expenses related to an injury due to an accident that are not
necessarily medical in nature: This includes lost wages, costs of
childcare or funeral costs, and others. As of this writing, Personal
Injury Protection coverage is only required in sixteen states.
QualityAutoInsurance.com
recommends that you look at your existing health insurance plan to see
what it covers as you may decide to go with the bare minimum of PIP or
MedPay coverage depending on what your health insurance provides in
these areas.
