New Law: No Texting While Driving

As many know, there has been a new law passed in over 15 states. Drivers are no longer allowed to text while driving a motor vehicle and can be awarded criminal charges for doing so. To many, this seems like a great idea. The number of texting-related accidents has increased drastically in the last few years, and it time to start cracking down.

However, for others this raises the question of, “how can this be monitored?” It usually ends up being a judgment call for the officer. If they feel as though there is probable cause to pull the driver over. Police officers also say that drivers usually admit to being at fault and don’t fight this law. Obviously, changes to the law will be made as police discover consistent issues.

Many people also want to know what EXACTLY is illegal to do while driving. The exact text of the law varies from state to state but most summarize that it is illegal to write, send, or read a text-based communication. So this means searching the web, sending a text message, reading e-mails, etc are all illegal, even when sitting at a red light.

As of January 1, 2010 the following states have made it illegal to text and drive:

  • Alaska
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Rhode Island
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • Washington D.C.
  • Oregon
  • New Hampshire
  • Illinois
